“Recent actions by the Government of Nauru against its judiciary are unjustifiable and very concerning for the administration of justice to all who live in Nauru” Justice Philip McMurdo, President of the Judicial Conference of Australia, said today. ”

Without any apparent legal basis, the Nauru Government purportedly dismissed its Resident Magistrate and deported him in defiance of an injunction issued by its Chief Justice Geoffrey Eames. The Government then refused a visa to the Chief Justice to re enter Nauru, effectively preventing him from discharging his duties.”

” The Judicial Conference of Australia strongly condemns these actions as a most serious interference with the independent and effective operation of Nauru’s courts and with the rule of law”, Justice McMurdo said.
